Chapter 9: A Geography of Power, Identity, and Difference in Adult Education Curriculum Practice

Why would it matter “where” we put our educational programs? After all, isn’t “place” just empty space, a proscenium arch framing but not much influencing human action? Why should we care where learning and education occur as long as we get the content right, use appropriate methods, employ good teachers, produce the right results for our stakeholders? For example, why could it possibly matter where we locate a continuing education program for a profession? Does it matter whether such adult education were placed on a college campus or located at a luxury business resort or even transmitted “through” cyberspace via distance technologies? Does where we put our adult education programs have anything to do with what we produce with them? Does place matter?
