First page of (Re-)Constructing a Movement for Social Justice in our Profession

While the turn of the millennia was only 8 years ago, we seem to be in a dramatically different world today. The dominance of the bubble economy is a mere memory yet the corporate metaphor looms greater than ever in our schools thanks to the accountability movement, massive standardized testing, and NCLB. Countering this hierarchical, bureaucratic, and alienating direction, is a democratic-ethical tradition in the field of educational leadership. The purpose of this article is to describe the emergence of the New DEEL and the role it is attempting to play in reviving that tradition, thereby helping to move educational leadership closer to the goal of social justice.
