Begin by dividing the class into small groups. Each group receives: chart paper, markers, and a set of five images (a drinking straw, a birthday cake, a toilet, ice pops, and money in the form of a quarter). These objects are common in the world of young children. They are given 10-15 minutes to brainstorm all the ways in which each item can be named in Spanish. Groups should record these on their chart paper.

Now bring the class back together as a whole group and have each team share their results. As each group presents, compile their list of words onto a larger class “word bank.” Each item/picture will have its own word bank; place these word banks around the classroom’s walls.
