First page of A Closer Look at Internationalism in International Education in the Philippines
A Journey Towards Authenticity

Internationalization of education has been going on for over a century. However, it was only in the 21st century with its two world wars, the emergence of globalization, and the present global trepidation on terrorism that internalization in all facets of human endeavor has been given greater attention (Sylvestre, 2002, 2005). International education is the translation of internationalism into the aspect of human development. Along with the ongoing discussion on the broader concept of internationalization, its meaning is presently expanding through multiple frames of dialogues (James, 2005; Wylie, 2008). Most of the practices are still very much Eurocentric, with some Asian countries adopting international education through copying or franchising international curricula developed by the West (Tamatea, 2008). This chapter attempts to better understand how these translations are made and examine the conditions that surround the application of internationalism in education in the Philippines.
