In this chapter we attempt to make sense of vocational behavior through the lens of cultural values. More specifically, we use a framework of five value-orientation dimensions (Ho, 1987) to explain how cultural values may relate to vocational behavior and work environment. These five dimensions include (a) beliefs in human nature, (b) time orientation, (c) preferences for human activity, (d) social relations, and (e) relationship between people and nature. We briefly explain the five dimensions of cultural values, followed by a discussion of how these value orientations influence vocational behavior as well as career theory and practice. After examining contemporary challenges to value orientations, a paradigm for value adaptations is proposed. We conclude the chapter with implications for career theory and practice.
