Families that relocate to the U.S. are faced with varying and complex challenges. Language continues to be one of the most critical factors influencing immigrant access to education, healthcare, and jobs. In this chapter, the authors summarize the effects of language brokering on children in three specific areas. First, attention is given to clarifying understanding the implications of language brokering on the parent-child relationship. Next, the importance of developing bilingualism in language brokers is examined, particularly as it relates to the cognitive development and acculturation of children. Finally, the discussion examines the emotional effects that language brokers develop towards their cultures and language as a result of their language brokering experiences.
