The ways that the mental health field has viewed and treated sexual minority clients in therapy has changed drastically over the years. While these changes have been primarily for the better, this chapter explores ways in which outdated and stigmatizing views of LGBTQ mental health still linger today, albeit in novel and increasingly subtle ways. Data from qualitative interviews with a southern LGBTQ population will be explored, specifically in its relation to trends in the mental health field. Additionally, recommendations for positive and affirming therapy practice with LGBTQ clients will be explored, highlighting flaws in the current state of LGBTQ mental health care.
