I commend Monica for her critical analysis of academia and the relationship between mentoring and social capital for women in higher education. I found her own story familiar, and the other stories she discussed were also reminiscent of my lived experiences. To further elucidate the notion of social capital and the power of mentoring, I will tell my story. I entered the realm of higher education from a nontraditional career and education path. I have my PhD in counseling phycology. My transition into the higher education field was mostly successful, with very minor struggles along the way. Much of my success throughout my career as a young professional was derived from the strong guidance and support of my mentors who were established in the field. Like that of Burke, I firmly believe that throughout your life there will be a package of people who help you move along the way. Those people will vary in appearance based on the location to which you move.
