As a part of Eastern Kentucky University’s (EKU) middle level program, students are required to complete a professional education semester preceding student teaching. This semester consists of a block of four courses taught by a team of middle level teacher educators. The courses include middle grades curriculum (EMG 430), reading in the content area (EMG 447) and two special methods classes corresponding to their content emphases (English/communications, mathematics, science, or social studies). The block schedule and team teaching arrangement is designed to model middle level best practices (Combs, Reehm, White, & Wilder, 2000; Combs & Wilder, 1999; McDaniel, Stowell, Rios, & Christopher, 1994).
