Chapter 18: Problem-Based Learning Theory

The term problem-based learning (PBL) encompasses different meanings depending on the paradigm. Within the educational paradigm, the meaning of the word depends upon the objective of the lesson, the lesson design, the age and ability of the students and the skills of the teacher. PBL consists of student-centeredness, teachers acting as facilitators, small group learning, and beginning with problems that are ill structured and authentic (Barrows, 1986, 1992, 1996).This method is focused on the student learner. The student centered methodology is multifaceted and uses complex problems to find various solutions. This simultaneous format allows for students to develop a content knowledge foundation while using academic skills and problem-solving strategies to work through the problems seeking a solution.
