Bayesian approaches are receiving an increasing amount of attention in structural equation modeling (SEM) as viable, if not preferable, alternatives to more traditional modeling approaches. With recent theoretical developments, practical applications, and production of software serving as a guide, we anticipate that Bayesian concepts and practices are likely to play an increasing role in the future of SEM and related modeling techniques. This chapter describes Bayesian approaches to SEM by presenting concepts associated with Bayesian modeling, illustrating procedures for conducting SEM analyses in this framework, and discussing points of departure from frequentist approaches. Conceptual and practical strengths and weaknesses of the current state of the art will be discussed with an eye toward areas for future development.
