First page of Problem-Based Learning
Gaining Competency Through Practice

Problem-based learning (PBL) is a constructivist learning strategy where learners work with a facilitator in a team (or set of teams) to solve loosely defined large-scale problems designed to lead the learner to meet defined objectives (Thomas, 2013, p. 1). There has been an increasing appeal, particularly from the professional sector, for pedagogical leadership and skills development techniques that focus less on lengthy theory-based lectures and case studies and more on organizational problem-solving aligned with corporate strategy and outcomes (Raelin, 2000). Engaging learners in a problem-centered environment may help bridge the gap between theory and practice—an issue that has been faced in learning and development for a long time (Sherwood, 2004).
