In Part IV, the emerging researchers responded to an assignment titled “School Controversy,” which challenged them to explore a significant, school-related controversy in the form of a white paper. The assignment tasked them with examining how controversial proposals for changing school policy or practice reflect differences in perspective and how these controversies express deeper societal agendas, anxieties, and values.
Students adopted the role of an informed teacher aiming to influence school policy, writing for an audience of legislators who are generally familiar with social issues but not experts in education. Their papers were designed to present the issue, outline conflicting perspectives, review relevant scholarly research, and propose informed recommendations for policy change.
