The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) is a public university located in the central region of North Carolina. Chartered in 1789, UNC was the first university to be established in the state. UNC is not only the oldest institution in the state, it is the largest and most comprehensive as well. The University serves 24,439 students and offers instruction in over 100 fields.

The University has been educating teachers since it opened its doors to students in 1795, making it one of the oldest teacher education institutions in the country. The School of Education offers programs for the preparation of preschool, elementary, middle, and secondary teachers, as well as other school personnel.
