In many ways academic settings are rooted in heterosexual identities. Likewise, there is an overwhelming dominance of white culture which have sustained barriers to people of color not only being in these spaces, but also being able to operate authentically. Specifically, when addressing the intersecting needs of being Black and Gay, it is often overlooked or even ignored in academia spaces. Often many colleagues in higher education do not share these identities and lived experiences. Black Gay men often experience isolation and roadblocks within their educational profession. And there are minimal to not supportive systems to support a healthy work/life balance. The purpose of this chapter is to share my story as a Black Gay male educator, present successes, and challenges along my journey in academia and, provide recommendations to promote and strengthen an inclusive work environment for Black Gay men.
