Abstract
This paper looks into factors behind the low rates of adoption of waste management and energy management measures by private companies in Egypt using data from the World Bank’s Enterprise Survey 2020. It reports that ‘company size’ is the primary element driving waste management decisions, whereas ‘ownership structure’ is the primary component behind energy management decision-making. The authors also find that low rates of adoption of waste and energy management measures have less to do with financial considerations than with a lack of awareness leading to their implementation not being an organisational priority and to a high regulatory burden. Its findings can inform policy and guidelines conducive effectively to the increased adoption of sustainable initiatives by private companies in Egypt.
