This study explores the potential of Nollywood (the Nigerian film industry) to drive tourism and entrepreneurial motivation in South Africa. Drawing on data from semi-structured interviews of 33 participants, including tourism officers, filmmakers, entrepreneurs, and educators, around the Gauteng province, the study argues that the dominance of Nollywood movies on South African TV channels presents a unique opportunity to enhance entrepreneurial innovation and pan-African cultural appeal for South Africa’s viewing audience. This is largely due to the film industry’s cultural authenticity and its widespread appeal for African-related issues. The entrepreneurial dynamics depicted in Nollywood films offer avenues for collaboration and economic growth, potentially creating job opportunities and fostering local businesses. Based on the findings, the study recommends increased government involvement in developing a more viable environment for strategic collaborations between the Nollywood industry and the local South African film industry. It also suggests the deepening of scholarly discourse on the transformative potential of the cultural and entrepreneurial aspects of the movie industry. Harnessing this potential can encourage homegrown sustainable development and economic growth in South Africa and beyond.
