In this chapter, we explore the role of senior human resources (HR) professionals as internal consultants within organizations, focusing on their strategic influence and the skill sets required for effective strategic guidance. Despite growing interest in the strategic advisory roles of senior HR professionals, the connection between internal consultancy and strategic HR management remains underexplored. Drawing on existing literature, we investigate the motivations driving senior HR professionals to adopt internal consultancy roles and identify the essential skills that enable them to provide strategic guidance. By comparing the skill sets of senior HR professionals and internal consultants, we reveal significant overlaps that suggest senior HR professionals can enhance their strategic impact by integrating internal consultant skills. Our analysis underscores the value of consultancy thinking for enhancing organizational impact and advancing the strategic role of HR. This article aims to contribute to the ongoing redefinition of HR leadership through internal consulting and provides a conceptual foundation for further research and practical application, encouraging both internal consultants and senior HR professionals to embrace common skill sets that drive professional growth and strategic impact.
