Chapter 1: Introduction

This opening chapter outlines the background and focus of the book and conceptualises the authors’ key terms, such as ‘sustainable development’, ‘Education for Sustainable Development (ESD)’ and ‘the higher education sector’. This chapter explains the focus of the book on policymaking in higher education in the area of ESD through analysing international case studies. The structure of the book is outlined here as well.
