Purpose: This study explores the transformative role of artificial intelligence (AI)-driven approaches and modern rehabilitation technologies in physiotherapy (PT), with a focus on enhancing diagnostic precision, patient engagement, and recovery outcomes.
Design/methodology/approach: The research synthesises current literature and empirical findings related to the integration of AI, remote monitoring, gamification, robotic-assisted devices, and mobile health applications in PT. It analyses the impact of these technologies on personalised treatment plans and patient outcomes.
Findings: AI technologies improve diagnostic precision by up to 20%, while the use of remote monitoring and gamification increases patient engagement by more than 40%. Structured rehabilitation plans guided by physiotherapists (PTs), when combined with modern tools like robotic devices and muscle-tracking sensors, contribute to a 15% reduction in recovery time and success rates reaching up to 75%. Among four major categories of rehabilitation technologies, robotics and virtual reality stand out by improving outcomes for 60–80% of patients. The integration of assistive technologies and smartphone applications further enables real-time feedback and continuous monitoring, streamlining assessment and treatment personalisation.
Originality/value: This chapter highlights how blending traditional PT with AI and emerging technologies creates a more engaging, efficient, and personalised rehabilitation experience. The findings underscore the potential of these innovations in reshaping PT practices, optimising clinical decisions, and enhancing resource utilisation.
