Architects have investigated various Artificial Intelligence (AI) methods since the 1960s. These methods include optimization artificial intelligence (OAI) techniques from earlier times to more recent generative artificial intelligence (GAI) approaches introduced in early 2022. This chapter focuses on the AI models in architecture, particularly GAI models. This chapter aims to identify literature gaps and highlight prospective research areas. It will discuss the said models’ approaches, advantages, disadvantages, current uses, and future applications in academia and industry. The findings indicate that, to date, studies on applying GAI techniques in architecture focus on testing the capabilities of the GAI models and demonstrating their potential to solve different problems in architecture during the conceptual design stage. This chapter identifies novel areas for future research work on GAI, which benefits architects in academia.
