Smart cities have moved to the top of the priority lists due to the ever increasing demand for smart tourism. The unique and engaging experiences that these technologically advanced cities offer is critical to a better tourism experience and the development of national tourism. However, the adoption of smart city technology has several positive and negative effects on the satisfaction of tourists and on tourism. This chapter uses a narrative approach and synthesizes insights from peer reviewed academic literature and industry reports to examine the impact of smart city technologies on tourism experiences. It also discusses potential measures that may help address the associated drawbacks. The chapter finds that smart city technologies have a dual impact on tourism experiences. On the one hand, they enhance traveler comfort, create more immersive interactions, strengthen the sense of safety and security, encourage more favorable recommendations and support the preservation of natural and cultural resources. On the other hand, the chapter also points to a number of concerns around the digital gap, privacy risks, technical failures and cyberattacks, erosion of cultural identity, and wider economic impacts. The chapter argues that smart city technologies alter tourism experiences depending on how they are utilized, and that the positive impacts of smart city technologies must be balanced by proactive measures to mitigate negative impacts. The findings of the chapter would be useful for city developers, as well as tourist and destination managers, in comprehending the dual impacts of smart city technologies on tourism experiences and tourism as a whole. This will lead to a more efficient use of smart city technologies and infrastructure development, resulting in better tourist experiences.
