First page of Embracing Diversity: Present Ramalepe’s Autoethnographic Journey

Like many children, my earliest stories are of innocence and curiosity, surrounded by a community rich in traditions and warmth. Nonetheless, as I reflect on my journey, I am compelled to look beyond personal experiences and explore the complicated interplay between human identity and the various cultures that have created my perspective. In this autoethnographic exploration, I embark on a journey of self-discovery and exploration, unravelling the nuances of my encounters with both familiar and foreign cultures.

My roots are in Limpopo, where I was born and reared in the little community of Wisani, located just outside of Tzaneen. My journey began on 8 December 1999, at Letaba Hospital. Growing up, I was immersed in the vibrant Pedi culture, also known as Sotho-Tswana, which was prevalent in our community. Alongside this cultural backdrop, there were also sections of our village inhabited by Tsonga people. Unexpectedly, I lost my mother at a young age leaving me in the support of my grandmother. My grandmother became my steadfast support, moulding my character and providing constant encouragement. I often reflect on her impact and influence with a deep and heartfelt quotation: ‘In the storms of life, you’ve been my anchor, grounding me and strengthening me to weather every challenge’.
