First page of Pride in My Cultural Heritage: Being of Congolese Background in South Africa

My name is Eliza Sibongile Kabulu, and the following is my autoethnography, which describes the cross-cultural experiences that I have lived through from early childhood to my current young adulthood. The prefix ‘auto’ found in the term autoethnography explains my subjective reflection of my lived experiences (Adams & Herrmann, 2023). The self-reflections I express in this writing are based on the different cultures that I have come to interact with throughout my life. When I touch on the term cross-culture, I refer to the variations found among different cultures that I have come to experience in terms of the traditions and norms that a group of people find acceptable (Kita, 2020).
