Abstract
Storytelling is a universal communication technique with strong roots in culture, education and entertainment. Its potential as a teaching tool is still untapped, though, especially when it comes to using commercials to teach narrative techniques. This study fills this knowledge gap by examining how commercials can be incorporated into storytelling instruction to teach audience connection, emotional engagement and narrative structure. Using a systematic approach, the study pinpoints important commercial narrative components, including character development, plot structure, emotional appeal, visual storytelling and sociocultural narratives. Character-driven plots, moral messages and emotional resonance are among the recurrent themes found in a qualitative study of 15 well-known advertising campaigns from around the world. To assess the pedagogical viability of integrating ads into curricula, educators participate in focus groups that supplement these insights. The findings demonstrate that advertisements effectively teach storytelling and foster creativity, critical thinking and cultural awareness. Through deconstructing advertisements, learners can better understand narrative construction, audience engagement and ethical considerations in media narratives. Case studies of iconic campaigns illustrate how advertisements can serve as practical examples for storytelling exercises. This study introduces a novel framework that bridges advertising and education, emphasising advertisements’ potential to enhance creativity and storytelling proficiency in educational settings. The integration of advertising narratives into pedagogy fosters not only storytelling skills but also critical engagement with media, offering educators innovative approaches to narrative education.
