Abstract
This chapter examines the rupture and transition experience of a beginning teacher, Mr. Sawada, in a Japanese school abroad, through a leadership lens. A critical issue in Gestalt psychology and Kurt Lewin’s field theory is the assumption that Gestalt structure is nondevelopmental. Integrating the Trajectory Equifinality Modeling (TEM) and transduction with Lewin’s work is essential for understanding leadership dynamics. Using a case study approach, an interview session was conducted with Ms. Nagatani, a colleague involved in Mr. Sawada’s transition, to explore the process. The session was analyzed through the TEM and Gilbert Simondon’s individuation theory. Ms. Nagatani’s supportive role helped Mr. Sawada navigate his rupture, progressing toward a life trajectory focused on “children’s feeling of safety.” This chapter illustrates how leadership emerges as an intra- and interpersonal semiosis rather than a mere style or behavior, aligning with von Fircks’ (2020) view of leadership as a movement within the dialogical self.
