Homestay Tourism and Economic Sustainability: A Systematic Literature Review

The systematic literature review is conducted to evaluate how the previous research on the economic sustainability of homestays was conducted. The paper adopted the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) flowchart and reviewed 71 journal articles from 2009 to 2024. The review explores how homestays have been previously researched in terms of economic sustainability, research method and geographical location. The review provides information on the various challenges in attaining the financial sustainability of homestays. The input-mediators-outcome (IMO) framework is reviewed and contributed as a future research agenda. The review could observe that significant topics like homestay technology competency and technology adoption to overcome economic sustainability challenges are rarely addressed in the existing literature.
