Abstract
As the philosophy of science has shown, the theory-ladenness and value-ladenness are present in both everyday life and science. Everyday use of terms such as value may be confusing in a sensitive context because the values might be based on different ethical theories. This chapter focuses on the core values that Finnish Universities of Applied Sciences (UASs) are devoted to. The conclusions are based on the qualitative conceptual analytical reflections. Eight core values were identified in Finnish UASs to guide their educational approach, research, and collaboration with society. These values vary slightly from one institution to another, but the following common themes were present across the board: (1) High Quality and Excellence, (2) Work–life Relevance and Collaboration, (3) Innovation and Research, (4) Sustainability and Responsibility, (5) Inclusivity and Equality, (6) Global Perspective and International Collaboration, (7) Lifelong Learning and Continuous Development, and (8) Student-Centeredness.
