Chapter 1: The Village Sustainable Development Goals Policy: From Global to National Rural Policy in Indonesia

Sustainable development has become one of the most prominent slogans in global development discourses. Even though the essence of the concept is quite clear, its precise interpretation and definition have created strong motivation in many circles. This challenge of sustainable development then encourages researchers and policymakers to contribute to materialise it (Idowu et al., 2020). The sustainable development goals (SDGs) refer to a continuation of the sustainable development policy for the period of 2016–2030 that has been agreed at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) held in 2015 as a successor to the reform of the previous policy, the millennium development goals (MDGs), which became the reference for sustainable development for the period of 2000–2015 (UCLG, 2020).
