First page of Urban Transport in Net Zero Cities

Urban areas are home to 55% of the world’s population (United Nations (UN), 2019), and transport is a key enabler for these cities to be attractive centres to visit, study, work, and live in. Many challenges still exist to ensure sustainable mobility and transport systems that address the negative impacts of transport on communities, public health, and the environment, which include the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, air and noise pollution, congestion, road accident injuries and fatalities, and exclusion. There is still much work to be done to increase social justice, improve liveability and well-being for communities while creating urban environments that are accessible using mobility and transport systems that mitigate emissions and are resilient to climate change futures. Indeed, the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal 11 calls for inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable cities and communities (UN, 2023).
