12: Teacher Competency Development from Value-creating Education

Inspired by the Japanese educator, Daisaku Ikeda’s (2020) work on education for global citizenship, we must promote a humanistic education based on wisdom, courage, and compassion, which conceives of peace as a natural state of trust and mutual love. Ikeda advocates a global revolution that begins with the individual human revolution, emphasizing education as the key to forming responsible generations that respect the environment and life on the planet. Global citizenship education must foster competencies and learning processes that enable students to critically understand globalization and cross-cultural issues, overcoming ethnocentrism. Education focused on global citizenship is closely related to global awareness of issues such as inequality, climate change, racism, and war – fundamental aspects addressed in the Earth Charter. It seeks to develop an understanding of and engagement with these problems, recognizing the historical and current interdependence of colonialism and neoliberal globalization. To effectively address global citizenship, it is necessary to have a deep awareness of our position in history and in a world marked by economic inequalities.
