1: The Social Construction of [American] Identity and Language in the Public Sphere

Chapter 1 explores the social construction of [American] identity and language in the public sphere, particularly as it relates to Spanish-speaking communities. Drawing on frameworks of social construction, intersectionality, and representative bureaucracy, the chapter examines how identity is shaped both internally and externally and how these identities are reinforced or challenged by public policies and discourse. Through critical reflection and personal testimonies, it highlights the tensions between assimilation and acculturation and the consequences of English-dominant systems for multilingual populations. A key contribution of this chapter is its examination of the terminology used in this edited volume to describe Spanish-speaking communities/members, and issues of power, hegemony, language, and identity both ascribed and self-imposed. The chapter argues for a more inclusive public service framework that acknowledges and engages diverse identities and lived experiences.
