Since time immemorial, human civilization has carved out gender roles with unsaid rules “expected” to be followed in a stereotypical society. Media can be said to be a reflection of the society. Media representations effectively illustrate the diverse ways gender roles are constructed and communicated across various platforms. In the contemporary scenario, media has become an integral part of life, reaching the remotest parts of the planet. This review study attempts to evaluate the research trends of gendered representations on media and its impact on the society. The methodology used for the study is qualitative approach utilizing keywords search method utilizing search string “gender stereotyping AND social media.” The data for the study were exported from Web of Science and analyzed using R studio software. Like two sides of every coin, at one end, media are providing social support to the marginalized, giving them a platform to voice against the discrimination meted out to them viz. gender equality, helping them making aware of their rights and much more. In spite of the numerous positive facts, gender stereotypes are reinforced through media. Future research needs to address as to how to minimalize the commodification of women and enhance positive outcomes.
