Abstract
The goal of this chapter is to explore the multifaceted journey of students from India who choose to pursue studies at U.S. colleges and universities. It explores driving forces behind their migration, delves into their academic experiences, and, through the sponsorship of U.S. government programs like Curricular Practical Training, helps Indian students create professional pathways that can advance their careers, often settling in the U.S. Their journey is very much about aspirations, learning, challenges, opportunities and the shaping of global citizens. For many of these students, it’s about fulfilling the American Dream. India has 1.5M students who are pursuing higher ed in foreign countries with the U.S. having favored status. In 2024, there were 169,000 Indians studying in the U.S., they represent 18% of all international students in the U.S., and most Indians are pursuing STEM related graduate programs (78%) followed by business (11%). Many gravitate toward Silicon Valley, and Indians contribute $7.6B to the U.S. economy. Indians ultimately fill workforce needs around data science, cybersecurity, AI, robotics and engineering. Their U.S. educational experience enhances their marketability and earning power. The author details the immigration steps required of foreign students who arrive from India. Being able to provide Indians a world class education and the opportunity to engage cutting edge research can help the U.S. maintain its competitive edge.
