In the realm of higher education, the global COVID-19 pandemic has triggered a profound disruption, forcing higher educational institutions (HEIs) into a volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (VUCA) environment characterized by rapid and unexpected changes. The emerging global issues are globalization, status quo thinking, racial and gender equality, mentorship, e-leadership, funding, etc. This chapter delves into the critical leadership needs of HEIs, with a specific emphasis on the challenges and implications of status quo thinking in the face of unprecedented disruptions. Status quo thinking has long been a pervasive phenomenon within HEIs, often manifesting as adherence to traditional practices, resistance to change, and a reluctance to challenge existing norms. In the wake of the pandemic, the limitations of status quo thinking have been starkly revealed, necessitating a paradigm shift in higher education leadership. This chapter aims to provide a roadmap for HEI leaders seeking to navigate the challenges of disruption, cultivate a mindset of innovation, and drive transformative change in their institutions. The research objectives of this chapter are: to explore the roots of status quo thinking in higher education leadership, examine the impact of entrenched norms on institutional adaptability and innovation, and identify leadership competencies and strategies for overcoming inertia and fostering a culture of change, and continuous improvement to lead HEIs toward sustainable growth.
