Transparent leadership is instrumental in the development of the educational environment in South Africa by influencing the teaching and learning processes of higher education institutions. In the context of the distinctive socio-economic and political circumstances that these institutions encounter, this research investigates the influence of leadership transparency. The research employed a systematic literature review (SLR) approach to analyse peer-reviewed articles, institutional reports, and academic texts published within the past decade. It was specifically focussed on studies that addressed the various aspects of leadership transparency and its impact on both educational and administrative practices. The results emphasise the importance of transparent leadership in the cultivation of a culture of openness, in which the empowerment of instructors and staff is prioritised, and knowledge is readily exchanged. These institutions have demonstrated the importance of open communication in managing the intricate socio-political dynamics and frequent policy shifts, thereby encouraging an academic environment that increases social responsiveness and creativity while reducing uncertainty. Additionally, the strategic trajectory of these organisations is positively impacted by the increased adaptability in administrative procedures and teaching methodologies that is directly associated with enhanced leadership transparency. Higher education’s inherent conflicts and misunderstandings are mitigated by enhanced transparency, which also encourages mutual trust among stakeholders. This, in turn, results in increased student confidence in educators, improved academic performance, and stronger institutional loyalty. These insights present a compelling argument for educational institutions and policymakers to implement transparent leadership practices to enhance the quality of the educational environment and broaden the range of learning opportunities.
