Chapter 14: Managing landslide risk

Landslide hazards constitute a serious issue for most of the countries in the South, East and Southeast Asia region, with over 300 fatal landslides occurring in the region each year on average and landslides resulting in significant economic impacts. The increased frequency of extreme weather events associated with climate change will unequivocally increase the frequency at which landslides occur. This, coupled with ongoing demographic shifts and an increasing presence and density of communities in vulnerable landslide-affected areas, means that the scale of the problem will continue to grow. A proactive approach to risk assessment and management is required to prevent significant escalation of landslide-related fatalities and associated costs in the coming years.
