Section Four: Marginalization and Underserved Populations [Key Takeaways]

It would be impossible to adequately discuss issues of social justice in the context of the Islamic Republic of Iran (henceforth identified as Iran) without directly addressing aspects of marginalization owing to the internal human rights denial and strife in the nation (e.g., imposed by a religious fundamentalist political order, patriarchal culture and society, etc.) (Katzman, 2018). Library and information science (LIS) professionals are in a privileged position to potentially generate meaningful impacts that advance social justice and social equity agendas and resist political, social, and cultural hegemonies via information-related work (Mehra, 2022). This section includes three chapters that were submitted by passionate LIS advocates who represent key voices of progressive change in Iran to further the cause on behalf of minority and marginalized populations. It is important to acknowledge the representation of underserved communities presented in these chapters and concerns that are included in the collection as well note those that are not owing to a lack of manuscripts submitted on other topics.
