Chapter 15: Navigating the Digital Landscape: Embracing Business Transformation in Family-owned Enterprises

In today’s digital landscape, family-owned enterprises (FOE) must enhance their digital proficiency to stay competitive globally overcoming the arching challenges posted by bigger organizations in the similar domain. FOE must provide greater transition from simply utilizing technology to spearheading the digital age. A recent survey conducted by Price Waterhouse Cooper (PWC) revealed that Indian FOE hesitate to adopt digital solutions with reluctance toward concerns arising out of rapid disruptions, challenges in adaptation, and perceived risks associated with new technologies. Indian family businesses must demonstrate digital proficiency, adaptability, and robustness to navigate the unpredictability caused by market fluctuations, geopolitical instability, and the rapid advancement of technologies such as AI and Generative AI with the potential outlook to embrace business analytics for futuristic objective-driven goal-oriented approach.

The adoption of technology by family firms is often hindered by their focus on socio-emotional wealth and their reluctance to change. The responsive behavior to futuristic decision making is grounded on the theories of leadership, intergenerational influences, macro-micro economic ties, risk evading. In this chapter, the authors suggest that family businesses should abandon their conservative attitudes toward technology and adopt it unconditionally promoting digital micro culture and digital value development to focus on tunnel vision approach with government institutional support to protect, promote, and provide more attractiveness to reap the benefits arising out of improved decision-making, leading to increased productivity and profitability.
