First page of Community-based Tourism and Empowerment: Insights from SLR

CBT emphasizes the active participation and involvement of local communities in tourism development, focussing on promoting and preserving local culture, heritage, and natural resources while ensuring sustainable economic benefits for residents (Loulanskia & Loulanski, 2011; Pakshir & Nair, 2011; Suansri, 2003). It fosters community ownership, management, and participatory decision-making, aiming for equitable distribution of benefits and addressing local needs through empowerment, self-reliance, and transformative learning (Giampiccoli & Saayman, 2018; Laire & Gutierrez, 2022; Zielinski et al., 2020). Collaboration among local stakeholders and external partners strengthens CBT initiatives, enabling a balance between tourism growth and community well-being, while simultaneously conserving cultural and natural resources (Mtapuri et al., 2022; Okazaki, 2008). CBT, as emphasized by Alieva and Usmonova (2021) and Zielinski et al. (2021), plays a pivotal role in sustainable tourism by fostering local community engagement, empowerment, and participation in tourism development. It enhances the preservation of cultural heritage and environmental conservation while promoting respect for local traditions and improving the quality of life and well-being of residents (Krishna Prasad Sapkota, 2024). CBT supports economic benefits through employment creation, poverty alleviation, and the growth of local businesses, contributing to sustainable development in rural and marginalized areas. By encouraging collaboration among stakeholders, responsible resource utilization, and community-led management, CBT minimizes negative impacts, reduces over-tourism, and enhances tourists’ immersive cultural experiences (Priatmoko et al., 2021; Zhu et al., 2023). Furthermore, it facilitates innovation, adapts to climate change, and integrates sustainable practices for a balanced approach to socio-cultural, environmental, and economic development (Barbieri et al., 2020; Lee et al., 2024; Ngo & Creutz, 2022). The meta-analysis synthesizes research on CBT, focussing on its definitions, principles, and role in sustainable tourism. It identifies themes such as community empowerment, economic benefits, cultural preservation, and environmental conservation while addressing knowledge gaps in innovative CBT models and long-term impacts. By evaluating CBT’s contributions to poverty alleviation and stakeholder collaboration, it provides evidence-based insights for policymakers, promoting a holistic understanding of socio-cultural, economic, and environmental dimensions to advance sustainable tourism amidst global challenges like climate change.
