AI may lie at the helm of new directions for active and engaging learning. ChatGPT and similar Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) have been increasingly targeted for incorporation into teaching and learning practices. At the same time, educators and other curriculum stakeholders have expressed fears about how AI might encourage cheating or influence knowledge and the forms of its acquisition. In this chapter, we discuss our experience with deliberating over the use of ChatGPT for a graduate-level course aimed at training graduate students in higher education instruction. We outline some of our preliminary responses to the possibilities and challenges of using ChatGPT for engaging students in active learning. We further underscore how facing GenAI technologies head‑first is a way to ensure that humans, and teachers in particular, are leading the path toward revolutionary and ethical learning.
