The present systematic literature review (SLR) aims to discuss the various antecedents of employee engagement (EE) and the experiences that influence organizational performance. 124 articles published between 1999 and 2024 in journals are included in this review. The review results are organized in both descriptive and thematic analysis of the literature. It identified significant antecedents, key insights, findings, implications and areas for future research. The review focuses on the most intriguing and evidence-based areas of performance enhancement and long-term sustainable growth through employee engagement across various sectors. This area captivates the interest of a diverse group of stakeholders, including management practitioners, academicians, consultants, business professionals and research scholars. More specifically, this review guides further exploration on EE in different contexts and cultures, its relation with employee performance, antecedents and possible moderators.
