A Black woman was the hiring manager. And the only one on staff. She was not well-liked and her subordinates were seen as either her copy or someone more palatable to office comfort. Once her position was eliminated, her work was distributed among her office while their work continued to grow. But everything is just fine, right? After all, the office hit record-breaking goals while being an office of one. So imagine their surprise and disappointment when said “office” found another job and quit. This chapter outlines the rise, fall, and equilibrium one Black woman experienced in and out of a Student Services role.
