9: Math on the Midway Museum: From Both Near and Far

The USS Midway is an aircraft carrier museum in San Diego, California (U.S.). Museum staff have developed a series of STEM programs—in person and via distance learning. Thousands of local students have visited the Midway for in‑person field trips. In response to the 2019–2020 shift to remote and distance learning, Midway staff created and implemented a Distance Learning Program (DLP), designed for a fourth and fifth grade audience, Math on the Midway, which offers students an opportunity to study practical mathematics concepts. This DLP includes a downloadable app, pre‑visit activities, and a live broadcast to student classrooms to discuss how mathematics was used on the ship, allowing for synchronous learning opportunities.
