Abstract
In recent years, discussions on diversity, equity, and inclusion have become increasingly prominent in library and information science literature. However, the experiences of neurodivergent individuals are frequently overlooked in these conversations. There is little research on the workplace experiences of public library employees diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and on how public library workplace policies can affect those experiences. This chapter proposes that this research is necessary to ensure public library work environments are properly supporting and empowering employees with ADHD. The purpose of this research is to gather information about the public library workplace experiences of employees diagnosed with ADHD to determine how public library workplace policies affect their workplace experiences. It is important to hear directly from employees with ADHD to ensure they are being accurately represented and their true experiences being heard. This qualitative data will inform the design of a survey to explore if public library policymakers consider the library workplace experiences of employees with ADHD when creating internal workplace policies. By identifying and examining these experiences and approaches, the study aims to provide insights into effective strategies that contribute to a more inclusive and supportive workplace for employees with ADHD. Practical recommendations and guidance will be suggested for policymakers and organizational leaders who are aiming to improve inclusivity for individuals with ADHD within library environments and this research will potentially inform practices in other professional sectors. What changes have public library policymakers made to policies to address the needs of employees with ADHD?
