This introductory chapter frames the central challenges and possibilities facing LGBTQ+ communities in Southern Africa within wider cultural, legal, religious and historical contexts. It situates the volume’s contribution against a global backdrop in which sexual and gender minorities continue to face stigma and exclusion, while highlighting that African experiences are shaped by colonial legacies, cultural traditions and political discourse. The chapter outlines how Southern Africa presents a complex landscape: progressive legal reforms in South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Mozambique and Angola exist alongside restrictive laws and punitive measures in countries such as Zimbabwe, Uganda, Malawi and Zambia. These contradictions highlight the region’s contested terrain of rights and recognition. The chapter examines the role of activism, advocacy, culture, religion and health in shaping lived experiences. It highlights both obstacles, such as criminalisation, social stigma and institutional discrimination, and opportunities, including youth-driven shifts in attitudes, the resilience of community organisations and emerging inclusive practices in education and health. By mapping the themes addressed in subsequent chapters – law, culture, health, activism, education and digital intimacy – this introduction positions Unveiling Identities as a regional intervention that bridges scholarship and lived realities. The volume foregrounds intersectionality, decolonial critique and queer African histories, contributing new insights to scholarship that has often privileged perspectives from the Global North or focused narrowly on South Africa. In doing so, it establishes a foundation for nuanced, comparative analysis of LGBTQ+ struggles and agency across Southern Africa, while also highlighting the broader significance of these dynamics for debates on rights, recognition and belonging.
