Early adolescence is a critical window for shaping boys’ achievement, belonging, and character; however, conventional school models often fall short in meeting their developmental needs. ScotsX, an experimental school-within-a-school learning laboratory for Year 8 boys at The Scots College in Sydney, Australia, offers a compelling alternative. Grounded in Self-Determination Theory, ScotsX is designed to support boys’ psychological needs for connection, choice, and challenge, laying the foundation for social-emotional and academic success. Over the past three years, ScotsX has piloted an integrated approach to academic achievement, belonging, and character formation tailored to the unique challenges and opportunities of early adolescence. The curriculum includes mastery training, quests, coaching, experiential learning through X-Days, and formative rituals like High Table; these elements are all designed to foster deep engagement and growth. This chapter outlines the story of ScotsX’s design and implementation, explores evidence of impact, and shares insights for designing new models that support thriving middle school boys.
