Chapter 6: Nature-Based Health Tourism and Sustainability (NBHTS): A Southeast Asian Perspective

Nature-based health tourism (NBHT), an emerging segment within the wellness tourism industry, integrates natural environments with health-promoting experiences. Southeast Asia, with its rich biodiversity, indigenous healing traditions, and eco-diverse landscapes, has increasingly become a hub for NBHT activities. This chapter explores the development and sustainability of NBHT in Southeast Asia, focusing on how environmental conservation, cultural heritage, and local community involvement shape the sector’s growth. It investigates the current trends, challenges, and best practices from selected countries in the region, including Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Vietnam. Through a qualitative, comparative methodology involving case studies, expert interviews, and content analysis of government and tourism board publications, the research evaluates the sustainability practices integrated into NBHT. It examines the socioeconomic and environmental impacts on host communities and identifies key success factors for responsible tourism development. Findings suggest that while NBHT contributes significantly to rural development and cultural preservation, its sustainability is often undermined by inadequate policy integration, overtourism, and insufficient community engagement. However, successful models demonstrate that when local stakeholders are empowered and traditional knowledge systems are preserved and leveraged, NBHT can serve as a tool for sustainable development. The study also highlights the role of digital transformation and health-conscious consumer behavior in shaping future demand. This research provides critical insights for policymakers, tourism operators, and environmentalists seeking to balance economic growth with ecosystem protection.
