Chapter 3: “I Want to Feel Like a Human Being”: Support For Mothers and Children Impacted by Substance Use and Child Welfare

This study was designed to address critical gaps in understanding the experiences of mothers with substance use disorders (SUDs) involved with the Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF). Using an innovative and participatory photovoice methodology, the project empowered mothers to document and share their lived experiences through photography. These visual narratives, coupled with focus group discussions, provided valuable insights into the intersection of substance use, child welfare involvement, and family preservation. There were four main themes regarding family preservation: supportive care, collaborative care, coordinated care, and relational care. Key takeaways from the study emphasize the need for individuals who provide direct services to provide hope and supportive care to mothers. It is also important that a plan be trauma-informed and allow for flexibility, as mothers with substance use present a unique set of challenges and needs.
