The virtual or digital entity (in the above example, the cat) acts as its physical counterpart would. This requires not only that the digital entity be able to sense the physical but also be able to act upon the sensory information in a manner similar to the physical entity that it is acting as. The digital cat needs to sense a mouse and how and where it is moving. It also needs to act like a physical cat would upon seeing/hearing/smelling or otherwise sensing the mouse.
This blending of the physical and digital (or virtual) entities and the ability to transfer knowledge from one to the other allows applications to many areas besides being important for gaming. The following example from Verizon (Ashraf, 2019) is a case in point.
